Why the IWLA and a New Penn State Study Marks a Turning Point for 3PL Warehousing
It was a privilege to attend this year’s IWLA Convention in San Antonio and spend time with 3PL owners and industry leaders from across the United States and Canada. Once again, IWLA delivered a conference that combined meaningful networking with candid, forward‑looking conversations about where the 3PL warehousing industry is headed.
From keynote sessions to hallway discussions, the themes were consistent: innovation is accelerating, operational complexity is increasing, and the expectations placed on 3PL warehouse providers continue to rise. Leaders are navigating labor challenges, technology investment decisions, margin pressure, and customer demands, all while preparing for what’s next.
Innovation, Challenge, and Opportunity in 3PL Warehousing
The conference agenda reflected the reality facing today’s 3PL operators. Speakers shared practical insights on emerging technologies, automation, data visibility, and process discipline—alongside honest discussions about the challenges confronting warehouse operators today.
Just as important was the tone of the event. There was a strong sense of anticipation about the future of the industry and a recognition that 3PLs play a critical role in supply chains, economic growth, and resilience. That role deserves to be understood and represented, accurately.
A Defining Moment: The IWLA–Penn State 3PL Warehouse Impact Study
One of the most important developments at this year’s convention was IWLA’s partnership with Penn State University’s Smeal College of Business to launch the IWLA–Penn State 3PL Warehouse Impact Study.
This research initiative has the potential to become one of the most influential studies ever conducted for the 3PL warehousing industry. This study is designed to capture real operational insight from 3PL owners and leaders grounded in data, rigor, and scale.
The survey officially kicked off at the conference, and early participation signaled strong interest from owners who recognize the value of credible benchmarking and fact‑based insight.
Why This Study Matters to 3PL Owners and Leaders
For 3PL operators, the value of this study is twofold.
First, the results will deliver essential benchmarking insights that help owners and leadership teams better understand how their operations compare across the industry. That kind of perspective is critical for making informed decisions about growth, investment, service offerings, and operational priorities.
Second, and just as importantly, the findings will support industry advocacy for 3PL warehousing. Data matters when engaging with policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders at the federal level. Having credible, research‑backed insight into the economic and operational impact of 3PL warehouses strengthens the industry’s ability to advocate effectively.
For an industry that is often under‑represented or misunderstood, this is a meaningful step forward.
Participation Makes the Data Powerful
The strength of this study depends on participation from across the 3PL community. When owners and leaders take the time to share their insights, the resulting data becomes more accurate, more representative, and more useful.
This is how the 3PL warehousing industry tells its story:
With facts, not assumptions
With data, not anecdotes
And with a unified voice that reflects the realities of modern warehouse operations
Participation ensures that the industry has a seat at the table, and the credibility to influence decisions that affect its future.
A Call to Action for the 3PL Community
I strongly encourage 3PL owners and leaders to participate in the IWLA–Penn State 3PL Warehouse Impact Study. The insights gathered will help shape how 3PLs benchmark performance, plan strategically, and advocate for the industry going forward.
This is more than a survey. It’s an opportunity to help define the future of 3PL warehousing.
